Tae Kwon Do
Tae Kwon Do, which means the way of the foot and hand in Korean, is a martial art with a strong focus on kicking techniques. However, it is also made up of very powerful punches, knee strikes, elbow strikes, blocks, stances and footwork.
While learning Tae Kwon Do the students learn special forms, which help to engrain patterns of movement and muscle memory in the student. With practice, these forms will enable fast, instinctual and reflexive combinations of techniques for use in real life defensive situations if they should arise. Sparring with opponents is practiced in order to work on timing, distancing, and patterns of movement and to mentally prepare the students in case of the need to defend themselves.
As a sport, Tae Kwo Do is not only the official sport of Korea, but it also an Olympic sport. Watching competitors spar each other and preform their forms is not only inspiring but also fun!
