Escrima

Escrima is a stick, knife and hand held weapon based art form which also incorporates some kicking and joint lock techniques.

Also known as Arnis or Kali, the three names are nearly interchangeable. The only differences between them are due to the regional influences stemming from the area of the Philippines that they are taught. These slight differences are mainly in the use of shorter vs. longer sticks, thicker vs. thinner sticks, one stick or two sticks.

The techniques learned using the escrima sticks directly apply to nearly any “improvised weapon” that you can get your hands on. The weapon is an extension of your hand/arm/body turning nearly anything you can grab into a defensive tool. This makes Escrima a very useful, very real defensive system that compliments all other martial arts. You can take the skills learned from training in Escrima and apply them to an everyday situation using them alone or in conjunction with other defensive moves you might have learned in other arts like Tae kwon do, Hapkido, Aikido and more.

Improvised weapons are items that you have around you at the time you need it. You cannot always carry a knife, baseball bats are restricted in some counties and not everyone wants to carry a gun.

Examples of improvised weapons that you might have around you in an everyday situation are: a cane, rolled up newspapers or magazine, pens, rulers, branches, brooms, umbrellas, really anything you can grab.
